CRAIG BIGGIO DESERVES THE FINEST
July 7, 2007
He looks like he just got his first hit in high school. Actually, Craig Biggio, who still looks like a kid studying to be an accountant, just got his 3000th base hit for the Houston Astros. He stands 5’11 and still weighs about 185.
Not only that, he is one of the few loyal players in recent history. He choses to stay with Houston for 19 years. And he isn’t through yet. The kid was born on December 14, 1965. Believe it or not, he was also a catcher(1989-1991) before becoming a full-time second baseman. He even received a special award entitled “National League silver slugger team” for his catching in 1989.
Cavan Biggio, 11 with father Craig
Through last year, he had 281 home runs and 1,137 runs batted. Maybe these stats do not compare to the average guy in the Hall of Fame, but that’s exactly where Craig is headed for. He does a million things and still bats lead-off. For some of you on the East Coast who might not be aware of it, Craig was born in Smithtown, New York and graduated from Seton Hall. He’s been involved in 6 division champions and 2 series champions, and was named to 7 All-Star teams. Congratulations in advance!!!
Greg Maddux
Greg Maddux could wind up being the greatest pitcher ever. He’s won 340 games. Can he ever reach 400 and top Cy Young? While Bill Glavine fights to get to 300, it is conceivable that Maddux could pitch until he is 50. He’s 41 now. Anything can happen with this guy. He is much too incredible for words. Of course, the Hall of Fame is a certainty, but they might have to build a separate wing to accommodate Maddux who might get an occasional sore arm, only when shaving.
Paul Lo Duca
I still have no idea why multi-million dollar players somehow resent the press. What dangerous things can they do in the club house that ignites venom, like that of Paul Lo Duca? This guy makes news, off the field, more than anybody, but all the questions always seem directed to him as a player. He got carried away the other day regarding his 2 day suspension and then compared it with the international coverage of the war in Iraq.
Jack Cust
Outfielder, Jack Cust of the Oakland A’s just clubbed his 14th. homer of the season and brought his RBI totals to 38, which makes this year look like a new high for Cust. The Star-Ledger did a big story on him the other day but really never said that he can play the outfield as well as being the designated hitter. They mentioned that he fell down running one day, which implied that he couldn’t run. While the story said he wasn’t noted for his defense, they never mentioned his ability along those lines, or his arm strength. In other words, they didn’t play up the story as if he was anything but a DH.
By the way, he played the outfield yesterday and his average is now up to .288. He deserves a better story.
